Carpet Cleaning Tips | How to Get Red Wine Out of Carpet

Oh no! You were having a nice glass of wine after work, or perhaps you were having a party. Unfortunately, you spilled some red wine on your carpet.

You’ve probably heard it stains permanently, or that it’s extremely difficult to remove. Fortunately, all is not lost. Here are some carpet cleaning tips that will help you get out this tough stain.

Act Quickly

Hopefully you know right away when the spill occurs. If not, you may have a more difficult time getting it out of the carpet. You may know that the spill happened if you caused it, or a guest at your event might let you know.

The first step is to blot up as much as you possibly can. The more you can soak up before it sets, the less you’ll have to remove and the easier carpet cleaning will be.

Use Cold Water and Baking Soda

The first method to remove red wine from carpet uses simple household materials. First, pour water on the stain to dilute it. Keep blotting until you don’t get any more of the stain out from water alone.

Then, create baking soda paste with three parts water and one part baking soda. Apply it to the stain. Once the paste dries, vacuum the stain to remove the dried baking soda.

Hopefully, this will remove the stain. If not, you might need to try another method or call a professional.

Use Water, Vinegar, and Dishwashing Liquid

Another carpet cleaning method that might work well is a combination of water, vinegar, and dishwashing liquid. Start by blotting up as much of the wine as possible. Then, mix two cups of water with one tablespoon of white vinegar and one tablespoon or dishwashing liquid.

Using a sponge, apply this mixture to the stain. Blot to lift as much of the stain as possible. Continue the process of adding the mixture and blotting until the stain is removed.

It’s important to remember to blot and not to rub. Rubbing can push the wine deeper into the carpet fibers and make the stain worse.

Consider Commercial Wine Cleaning Products

If you aren’t able to get the stain out with household products, or you want to stock something in your home to help specifically with this type of problem, you might consider commercial products.

Products like Wine Away, Wine Off, and others can help you remove the stain. Simply apply it and let sit for several minutes. Blot the area until the stain is completely gone. Hopefully this carpet cleaning step works!
